How to Keep Couch Covers from Slipping

How to Keep Couch Covers from Slipping

A couch cover can mean several different things: a piece laid over a seat, a large woven cover draped across the furniture, or a fitted slipcover that wraps around the couch. Those designs need different measurements.

Before reaching for a tape measure, look at the product photos and size guide. The number of seats on your couch is useful context, but it does not tell you the dimensions of the pieces you need.

The short answer

Identify the cover type first. For separate cover pieces, measure each seat, backrest, and arm area you want to cover. For a single draped cover, measure the fabric path across the furniture. For a fitted slipcover, follow that product’s specific measuring guide.

Start by identifying the cover type

Cover type How it sits Measurement approach
Separate cover pieces or mats Lie over selected seats, backs, or arms Measure each covered section and any intended overhang
Single draped couch cover Falls loosely over several parts of the couch Measure the surface path the fabric must follow
Fitted slipcover Wraps around the furniture shape Use the product's required dimensions and shape guidance

Some covers are sold as one piece in the selected size. A photo showing a completely covered couch may show several pieces together. Check what is included before deciding on quantity.

Measure separate seat, back, and arm pieces

Use a flexible tape measure and keep the cushions in their usual positions. Draw a quick sketch of the couch and label each area so similar measurements do not get mixed up.

  1. Seats: Measure left to right across the area you want to cover, then from the back of the sitting area toward its front edge.
  2. Backrests: Measure the width of each area and the fabric path from the top of the backrest to where you want the cover to end.
  3. Armrests: Measure front to back, then over the top of the arm and down as far as you want the piece to fall.
  4. Chaise: Measure its width and longer seat depth separately. Do not reuse a regular seat measurement.

Follow the measuring arrows in the product's size guide. They may ask for a flat surface measurement, a tuck allowance, or a particular amount of overhang. These are not interchangeable.

Allow for the coverage you want

A piece that exactly matches the top of a seat will give a different result from one that hangs over the front. If the size guide lets you choose your own drape, add that allowance to the relevant measurement.

Example: A seat area measures 60 inches wide and 24 inches deep. If you want 4 inches of fabric beyond each side and 6 inches over the front, your planned coverage is approximately 68 × 30 inches. Compare that target with the product's size chart and any required tuck allowance before ordering.

This example is for a loose piece. It is not a formula for a fitted slipcover, and extra fabric should not interfere with moving parts on a recliner.

Measure a single draped cover along the furniture

For a cover that passes over both arms, measure along that whole fabric path rather than only across the sitting area. Do the same from the back, over the backrest and seat, to the intended front edge.

For an L-shaped sectional, one rectangle may create uneven coverage or bunch at the corner. Check whether the product supports your layout or whether separate pieces make more sense.

Keep a measurement worksheet

Area Width Depth or fabric path Quantity
Main seat ___ in ___ in ___
Backrest ___ in ___ in ___
Armrest ___ in ___ in ___
Chaise ___ in ___ in ___

Keep the exact measurements instead of rounding down. Note the couch material and any unusual shape, then compare everything with the product listing.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always choose the larger size?

No. A little extra fabric may help a draped cover, but too much can bunch up. A fitted cover needs to stay within its stated size range. Follow the relevant guide.

Does “three-seater” tell me which cover to buy?

No. Three-seat couches vary in width, depth, and arm shape. Measure the actual furniture and check the dimensions.

Do I need separate pieces for the backrests?

That depends on the product and the coverage you want. Check whether the listing sells individual pieces or a complete set.
